“The most important thing for anyone in this lifetime is to relieve the suffering of another person. Of course, yourself too. Do something to relieve the suffering of other people, even if you don’t have to give them money or food or clothes or anything, just talk to them, comfort them.”
– Dr. Pillai
We may wonder what a small bag of chickpeas, a tin of tooth powder, and a tube of pain-relieving gel can do. These items make a HUGE difference to the destitute and abandoned elders in rural India. Due to long-term poverty, these elders suffer from chronic illness and disabilities that prevent them from continuing to work. With no family support, their meager government pension is insufficient for their basic needs of food, medicine, clothing, and shelter. Already in poor health, these elders are forced to live in dilapidated huts, unprotected from the elements. They may even become homeless when their huts are washed away during the monsoon season.
The good news is, together as a loving community, we can improve these elders’ lives significantly by becoming their sponsors through Tripura’s Hope of the Elderly program. Right now, ten elders are waiting for your love and support. You can become a sponsor by donating $40/month or $480/year. Each month, on your behalf, Food and Hygiene Kits will be delivered to your designated elder by our Hope Centers’ children and volunteers. As a sponsor, you will also receive quarterly updates and photos of your elder. In these sharings, you can experience how generosity and kindness restore your elder’s health, spirit, and dignity.
Meet the Elders in Need of Your Support
These are just a few of the many elders who need your help to live with dignity and hope:

Nallaponnu: At 75, Nallaponnu’s life has been a journey through poverty. After losing her son and husband, she was left alone to care for herself. Ongoing support will help her continue to face each day with a little more hope.
Elangiyam: A widow and mother of twin daughters, Elangiyam has found some peace knowing that she is supported. However, she still needs regular ration kits to relieve her daughters’ worries and sustain her health.
Valliammal: As she ages, Mrs. Valliammal finds daily chores more difficult. She needs continued support to maintain her health and live without fear of hunger.
Santhi: Her health has deteriorated due to diabetes, making it difficult for her to work. She relies on a monthly old-age pension of Rs. 1,000 INR ($12) to sustain herself. Continued support will provide the necessary nutrition and reassurance that she is cared for.
Chinnakal: Living alone in a small hut, Ms. Chinnakal depends on the Food and Hygiene kits as her primary support. Your sponsorship can continue to bring her the hope and dignity she deserves.
Vijayan and Mrs. Jaya: Vijayan, a former cobbler, and his wife Jaya have found peace knowing they are cared for. They still need ongoing support to ensure they have enough food and essential items.
Vasanthammal: After losing her husband, Ms. Vasanthammal was left with no support. She needs your help to continue receiving the kits that have become her lifeline.
