While many in the West celebrate St. Valentine’s Day, people in India celebrate love in more colorful ways.
Children at the Pilgao Hope Learning Center in Goa celebrate the traditional Holi Festival. The Holi Festival is also known as the “festival of colors” or the “festival of love.” The festival signifies the victory of good over evil, the arrival of spring, the end of winter, and, for many, a festive day to meet others, play and laugh, forget and forgive, and repair broken relationships.
Many of the children demonstrate their love on special holidays by reaching out to others in the village.
Manik is one of these children. She is brilliant in academics and extracurricular activities. She is also very passionate about helping the needy. This month, the class theme was “Uplifting Women.” Manik helped a woman in her village by explaining the importance of having a bank savings account. This was especially helpful since the woman’s husband is an alcoholic and often takes her wages to spend on liquor. Manik feels that it is important to show our love for others by helping them when they are in need and further empowering them to help themselves.
