One Year of Phonemic Intelligence: Transforming Young Minds in South African Schools

This November marks the one-year anniversary of introducing Phonemic Intelligence (PI) in South Africa, and the impact has been incredible! Since its launch, over 1,000 children at three primary schools, Green Hill, Northdale, and Piet Retief have been practicing PI daily, with more schools currently undergoing training to adopt this revolutionary approach to learning.

Phonemic Intelligence, designed to stimulate cognitive development through sound-based exercises, has already become a favourite part of the students’ day. At both schools, PI activities are incorporated into the morning and mid-day routines, creating a lively and engaging classroom environment that students look forward to.

The Impact of PI So Far

Over the past year, students have shown remarkable enthusiasm for the PI exercises, which boost their confidence and creativity. Teachers report that the program has helped improve focus and social interaction in the classroom, making learning more enjoyable. Even those students who struggle academically have felt a sense of accomplishment through mastering these simple yet powerful exercises, often referred to as “brain exercises.”

Here’s what some of the Principals and Teachers have to say about the PI program:

“As students become more proficient in recognizing and manipulating PI, they feel a sense of accomplishment. This boosts their confidence and motivates them to continue learning.”Larusha Govender, Teacher, Green Hill Primary School

“I trust in the Phonemic Intelligence Programme to take us to the next level of Learner development, Behavior, and also boosting teacher moral. – Mrs. Singh, Principal, Northdale Primary

“Our colleagues and learners are very positive about our PI Programme.” – Ms. Ndlovu (Mamakhulu), Principal, Piet Retief Primary

Beyond cognitive benefits, PI is also fostering leadership skills. Students who excel in PI are setting a positive example for their peers, encouraging others to improve and engage more fully with the exercises.

Looking Ahead

“In August, at a special event commemorating 30 years of democracy in SA and celebrating woman in leadership, 200 educators were introduced to PI and its ability to restore holistic wellbeing, in addition to boosting academic abilities. More pathways have begun to open since, for its uptake further afield.” Dr. Sheylyn Pillay, PI SA Lead

As we celebrate this milestone, we are thrilled to see the continued expansion of Phonemic Intelligence (PI) in South Africa. With more schools currently in training and new opportunities emerging, the program is set to reach even more young learners, helping them develop essential skills for academic success and emotional resilience.

Phonemic Intelligence is not just about improving classroom performance—it’s about transforming how children approach learning, providing them with tools that extend far beyond the classroom. We are excited to see how many more lives PI will touch in the years to come.

We are deeply grateful to our Tripura family for their unwavering support of the PI program. Thanks to you, we’re empowering more children to thrive both inside and outside the classroom!
