Tharani dreams of helping others
Attending the Atchampatti Hope Learning Center in Tamil Nadu, India is a young girl named Tharani, who has great hopes for the future.
Tharani, an 8th grade student, enjoys learning about subjects like Phonemic Intelligence, nutrition, and yoga. Her troubled past has propelled her to feel optimistic about her professional future. She sadly remembers watching her uncle die of cancer, who she believes gave up and passed away after his nurse told him to give up, despite good medical treatment.
From this day on, Tharani has aspired to be a nurse in order to encourage and uplift patients in her care.
Celebrating Diwali: The Festival of Lights
In October, all the children in Tharani’s class were excited about Diwali. Diwali is a huge Hindu holiday that is as important to Indians as Christmas into Westerners. It is held on the darkest new moon night of Kartika, a month in the Hindu calendar that overlaps October and November.
Diwali is also known as The Festival of Lights, during which millions of lights all across India dot houses and rooftops in celebration. The name Diwali actually stems from the words “avali” (row) and “deepa” (clay lamps), referring to the row of lit clay lamps that Indians place outside of their homes. One of the most popular festivals of Hinduism, Diwali spiritually signifies the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, knowledge over ignorance and hope over despair.
Bringing Joy to Children in Need for Diwali
During Diwali, children are traditionally given new clothes. However, the poorest families cannot afford these gives. Children who do not receive new clothes on Diwali stand out from the rest, and this often makes their poor families feel ashamed on what should be a joyous day.
Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, on Diwali, the Tripura Foundation has been able to provide new clothes to our Hope Center children as well as holiday feast to their families.
